Why Are My Eyes Dry When I Wake Up?

You open your eyes after a good night’s sleep, only to feel as if someone sucked all the moisture out of them. That scratchy, uncomfortable sensation can leave you reaching for eye drops before you’ve even had your morning coffee. At Urban Optique & Eyecare, our optometrists have years of experience helping our patients manage dry eye disease, and we’d love to help you find relief.

Morning dry eye can result from a combination of factors, including decreased tear production or environmental factors such as low humidity or poor air circulation. Our team of eye care professionals can recommend at-home habits to try and, if necessary, in-office dry eye therapy

Common Reasons Behind Morning Eye Dryness

Overnight Factors

Your bedroom environment plays a bigger role in eye comfort than you may have guessed. Low humidity levels from air conditioning or heating systems can pull moisture from your eyes throughout the night, leaving them feeling dry by morning.

Ceiling fans and bedside fans pointed directly at your face can create constant air movement that disrupts your tear film. Even gentle air circulation, when pointed directly at your eyes for 8 hours, can contribute to dry eye.

Sleep-Related Issues

There is a condition called nocturnal lagophthalmos, which occurs when an individual doesn’t fully close their eyelids while sleeping. When your eyes stay partially open, air exposure can dry out the eye surface throughout the night.

As you sleep, your eyes naturally produce fewer tears. On top of that, you’re not blinking, which is the process that usually spreads tears across the surface of your eyes. Without that consistent spread, it makes sense that your eyes may feel dry when you first wake up.

Conditions That Can Affect Morning Dry Eye

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

The meibomian glands are tiny oil glands lining your eyelid margins that produce the oily layer of your tear film. This oily layer keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly, so when they’re blocked or inflamed, it can contribute to dry eye.

For some people, inflammation around your eyelid margins can worsen overnight, making morning symptoms more noticeable. The swelling and irritation can interfere with the quality and stability of the tear film.

Health Conditions and Medications

Some autoimmune conditions can affect the glands that produce tears, leading to long-term dry eye symptoms.

Many prescription medications reduce tear production as a side effect. Certain antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants are known to contribute to dry eye symptoms.

Hormonal changes, especially those related to aging, pregnancy, or menopause, can also influence tear production and tear film stability.

Lifestyle Factors That Worsen Morning Dryness

Screen Time and Device Use

When you focus on screens, you tend to blink less than normal. This reduced blinking means your tears don’t spread evenly across your eye surface, leaving some areas dry. Following the 20-20-20 rule can help reduce strain throughout the day.

Late-night scrolling or working on devices right before you go to sleep can mean you’re heading to bed with already dry eyes. This extra strain may leave your eyes feeling drier before bed, making morning symptoms more noticeable.

Contact Lens and Eye Makeup Habits

Sleeping in your contact lenses isn’t a good idea for many reasons, but it can also worsen dry eye symptoms by reducing oxygen reaching the cornea and increasing the risk of dryness and irritation. Always follow proper contact lens hygiene habits to avoid discomfort and keep your eyes healthy.

Makeup residue left on your eyelashes and lids can clog oil glands and interfere with balanced tear production. Mascara and eyeliner are particularly problematic when not removed completely because product buildup along your lash line creates an environment where bacteria can thrive, leading to inflammation that can worsen dry eye symptoms.

Treatment Options for Dry Eye

MiBo ThermoFlow and In-Office Treatments

MiBo ThermoFlow therapy uses gentle heat to unclog blocked oil glands in your eyelids. This helps rebalance the natural oil layer in your tears, reducing evaporation and improving comfort.

A professional dry eye evaluation can identify the specific factors contributing to your dry eye. Our team can examine your tear production, gland function, and eyelid health to create a plan tailored to your needs.

Customized treatment plans are designed to address your unique combination of dry eye factors. Rather than a 1-size-fits-all approach, personalized care targets your specific lifestyle, preferences, and needs.

At-Home Relief Methods

Not every case of dry eye needs in-office care. In some cases, preservative-free artificial tears can provide quick relief from dryness throughout the day. You can also try placing a humidifier in rooms where you spend a lot of time, like your bedroom or home office. Adjusting the air vents so that they don’t point directly at your face can also make a significant difference in your morning eye comfort.

Our office can provide a warm dry eye mask to help loosen blocked oil glands and improve tear quality. The gentle heat encourages the flow of natural oils and may help reduce inflammation.

For some people, supplements may be helpful. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, may support healthy tear production and reduce dry eye symptoms in some individuals.
